Josh’s love of trees and the great outdoors led to a career in forestry and wildland firefighting. After decades of experience, he gives you a glimpse into his day to day life working to protect our natural resources in his books. Josh has been writing down the stories from his career for years. In July 2025, he became Josh Shroyer, Author, with his first book, Show Me a Firefighter, published by Words Matter Publishing. This is a collection of short and often humorous stories of his time as a wildland firefighter. Here’s a small excerpt:
This book is a collection of memories and perspectives I have gained over the years of working in wildfire. Some are short stories; some are a little longer. Some have a bit of humor in them, while others may be a little bit serious. Almost all have some lesson that can be learned if you dig deep enough, while some I have made the lesson to be learned come out and hopefully slap you in the face. They are my stories, my memories, my perceptions of what happened. I may have changed some of the names to protect both the guilty and the innocent, and out of respect for private moments. A lot of these stories have been told to my kids about a thousand times as they always wanted to hear them. Of course, this is how some of the more humorous stories have come about. I feel it is best when you can laugh at yourself, as anyone who can’t is taking life much too seriously. I also believe that truth is stranger, and many times funnier, than fiction. You just can’t make this stuff up. I mean can you imagine what it feels like to have your pants down knowing there is a mountain lion close? Keep reading and you may find out.
